Well we saw the growth in the number of internet users but can we imagine where the limits of network traffic have reached. Intel Free Press released an infographic last week, showing What Happens in an Internet Minute? Results are far bigger in numbers one can even think of. Some interesting insights from the infographic is as under
  • Every minute 30 hours of videos is uploaded on YouTube. One million videos are being watched every minute.
  • Every minute more than 2 million queries are searched on Google
  • Every minute 6 million Facebook pages are viewed. More than 277,000 people login on Facebook every minute.

There are many more interesting facts but what took my interest was the amount of data transferred every minute. 639800 GBs of Global IP Data is transferred every minute. Whoa!! That’s a seriously huge number. Where are we heading? How much information are we producing? And how much of that is actually useful?

Gadgets sizes are getting smaller. From Mainframes to PCs to Laptops to Netbooks to Smartphones. Everyone is online every time now. Everyone is contributing to network traffic. This trend is not going to slow down. It will increase exponentially. But the catch is our networks. Are our networks ready to handle this explosion of information and network traffic? Information Security might be a big concern in coming years if some revolutionary changes don’t come in fields of networks. At present we have same number of network devices as global population but by 2015, network devices will grow up to twice of global population. Bandwidth consumption will be at an all time high with no chances of reduction.
Let’s hope that growth of Information Technology continues to be a boon only for mankind. It should not become a Frankenstein’s monster
