Android OS - An Interesting Journey

When we talk about Apple iOS or Microsoft Windows Phone, common people never know their recipe. The secret of all it’s tastes is provided to you just by Android. It’s open, it’s cool and tasty too.

Today as a part of our Interesting X series, we bring to you important as well as interesting facts about a major player in mobile device operating system field, Android OS.

“Android operating system is Linux Kernel based.”

“Android code is released by Google as open-source under Apache License.”

“Maintenance and continuous development of Android is responsibility of Android Open Source Project which is led by Google.”

“As per Andy Rubin, there are 8,50,000 Android devices activated daily (as of Feb 2012).”

“Initial developer of Android OS was Android Inc.

“Android Inc. was founded by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White in Palo Alto, California, US in October, 2003.”

“In its early days, Android Inc. was out of money and Steve Perlman, Rubin’s friend helped him with $10,000 in cash and didn’t even accept the stake in the company against it.”

“Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005.”

“Now, Android is developed by the Open Handset Alliance which is led by Google.”

Open Handset Alliance is a consortium of 86 hardware, software and telecommunication companies and was founded in 2007 with motive of enhancing “open standards” for mobile devices. On the foundation day itself, OHA announced its first product, Android, a mobile device platform built on linux kernel version 2.6

“After continuous efforts of OHA, in Q4 2010, Android was listed as the best selling smartphone platform worldwide by Canalys.
