Apple Overtakes Samsung while Nokia Sinks

Smartphone market is growing at a rapid rate and it’s almost a war like situation between Apple, Samsung and Nokia. After Steve Jobs, most people thought that Apple’s market will go down but it didn’t happen. Apple kept on growing its market on the foundations led by Jobs. 
Strategy Analytics recently published their report related with sales of Smart Phones. Finally Apple crossed Samsung in volume of sales in Q4, 2011. As we can see in the following data Samsung has sold 36.5 million units in Q4’11 while Apple sold 37 Million units. Difference might seem less but still Apple has raised their sales a lot. Same is in case of Smartphone Vendor Market share. Apple has 23.9% as compared with 23.5% of Samsung.

Samsung and Apple have shown very healthy growths in Q4’11 as compared to Q4’10 but this growth has come from the downfall of Nokia. Nokia is really going through a bad phase. Their sales decreased to 19.6 million units in Q4’11 from 28.3 million of Q4’10. They have lost their market share by more than 15% which is a huge no.

Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Nokia’s global Smartphone market share halved from 33 percent in 2010 to 16 percent in 2011. A lacklustre touch screen Smartphone portfolio and a limited presence in the huge United States market caused Nokia’s shrinkage last year. Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft will be very much in focus during 2012, and the industry will be watching closely to see how swiftly the two companies can expand in the high-value 4G LTE market that is rapidly emerging across the United States, Japan and elsewhere.


So is it the beginning of the end of one of the most trusted Smart Phone brand Nokia? Will Apple and Samsung throw Nokia out of the market? Or will Nokia bounce back and show their potential again? Only time can give answers to these questions so let’s wait and watch.
